    Reading

We are currently reading 'Kingsuke's Kingdom' by Michael Morpurgo

Kensuke's Kingdom (Modern Classics): Amazon.co.uk: Morpurgo, Michael: 9781405281799: Books

Kensuke's Kingdom is Michael Morpurgo's story of young Michael, who, while sailing the world with his family, gets washed ashore on a deserted Pacific island with his dog, Stella, after falling overboard. He discovers he's not alone, meeting Kensuke, a secretive Japanese man marooned since WWII, who initially warns him away but eventually teaches him to survive, leading to a profound friendship built on respect, survival skills (fishing, painting), and a shared love for the island's orangutans. Their bond faces a test when Michael's family's yacht passes by, forcing them to choose between rescue and their peaceful, isolated lives, culminating in Kensuke helping Michael get home with the promise of secrecy.

Children also have access to Epic Reading where they have free access to a vast library of online books:

    Epic! - Dyslexia Help

    Epic Reading!

We focus on 7 key reading skills - clarifying, predicting, questioning, making links, summarising, inferring and evaluating.

    English

In English, we are beginning a new story, which closely links to our history topic 'Crime & Punishment'. The story is a historical adventure story about Magnus, Harold Godwinson's son, chronicling his journey leading up to the Battle of Hastings in 1066.

Anglo-Saxon Boy: An epic illustrated adventure set during a brutal, bloody power struggle, perfect for ages 9, 10, 11, 12 : Bradman, Tony, Hart, Sam: ...

After this, we will write a persuasive letter from the point of view of Magnus as he convinces other to join his cause. Following this, we will begin to read Alfred Noyes' 1906 narrative poem 'The Highwayman'.

Children will then create their own narrative poems based on the style of the author.

    Maths

In Maths, we will wrap up our unit of fractions and move into: converting units of measure, ratio and algebra before beginning a unit on decimals. Children's maths home this half-term will closely align with what they have been doing in class and will provide an opportunity to consolidate their learning.

To help you child's learning in this area, we strongly recommend that they make use of Times Tables Rockstars.

     Times Tables Rockstars

    Science

As scientists, we will identify common appiiances that run on electricity. We will construct a simple series of electrical circuits, identifying and naming its basic parts, including cells, wires, bulbs, switches and buzzers. We will also identify whether or not a lamp will light in  a simple series circuit using our knowledge.

    History

As historians, we will be learning about crime and punishment through the ages. We will recap different eras we have studied and create timelines key events. We will generate questions for historical enquiry, as well as examine a range of different historical sources.
